MANASSAS, Va. — A 37-year-old employee told a co-worker “three people are going to die,” then opened fire during a morning altercation at an equipment rental business in Manassas, Virginia, on Wednesday, killing two co-workers and wounding a third before taking his own life hours later during a police standoff on an interstate highway, authorities said.

Manassas Police Chief Doug Keen identified the shooter as Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, North Carolina, a recently hired employee at the United Rentals facility on Wellington Road, about 30 miles southwest of Washington, D.C., according to the Associated Press.

The violence erupted around 7:10 a.m., Chief Keen said. After an altercation, Grant told a co-worker that three people were going to die, produced a handgun, and began shooting, the AP reported.

Richard Lamont, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33, were killed in the shooting, police said. Some outlets have reported the older victim’s name as “Ricky Lamot”; the name Richard Lamont comes from the police chief’s statement. A third worker was wounded and remained in stable condition at a hospital in Fairfax, where doctors expected him to survive, though he will need surgery, authorities said.

Officers arrived within about three minutes of a 911 call at 7:11 a.m., but Grant had already fled the scene in a silver Toyota Camry, according to police.

Detectives tracked Grant’s cellphone to the Harrisonburg area, more than 100 miles west of Manassas. Virginia State Police later spotted the Camry on Interstate 81 in Augusta County. Troopers attempted to stop Grant at a rest area, and a pursuit followed. During the standoff on the interstate, Grant fatally shot himself, police said. Troopers did not use force.

The motive for the shooting remains unclear, and the investigation is ongoing, authorities said.

United Rentals, the company that operates the Manassas branch, is the largest equipment rental company in the world, according to company and trade-press descriptions.
