U.S. Marines conducted a verification boarding of a tanker suspected of trying to breach the American naval blockade against Iran, the latest escalation in a standoff that has intensified in the Strait of Hormuz region over the past week.
Marines from the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit, operating off the USS Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, used helicopters to reach the vessel — identified in reporting as the M/T Wen Yao, a roughly 300,000-deadweight-ton tanker — in the Gulf of Oman near the strait on July 16. The boarding was described by U.S. officials as a compliance check rather than a seizure.
The blockade took effect the evening of July 14. Since then, U.S. forces say they have turned back three commercial vessels attempting to cross the restricted zone, disabled one ship that did not comply with warnings, and boarded the Wen Yao to enforce the restrictions. U.S. forces have also reportedly struck several bridges inside Iran, aiming to cut supply routes to a port city and naval base that Iranian forces have used to threaten shipping in the strait.
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil chokepoints, and the blockade has raised concerns among shipping companies and energy markets about the risk of further confrontation. U.S. officials have framed the operation as an effort to curb Iranian oil exports and pressure Tehran, while Iranian officials have condemned the blockade as an act of economic warfare.
