PEMBROKE, N.Y. (AP) — A tour bus with 52 people on board crashed on Interstate 90 in western New York on Friday, August 22, 2025, leaving multiple people dead and dozens injured. The bus, which was traveling eastbound from Niagara Falls to New York City, lost control and overturned near the town of Pembroke, according to New York State Police.
According to a police spokesperson, Trooper James O’Callaghan, the bus “for unknown reasons… went into the median, overcorrected and ended up in the ditch” on the side of the roadway. Several witnesses reported seeing the bus lose control before it rolled over. The crash resulted in some passengers being ejected from the bus, while others became trapped inside the wreckage, as reported by The Independent. At least one child is believed to be among the fatalities.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul described the crash as “tragic” and stated that first responders were working to “rescue and provide assistance to everyone involved,” as she posted on social media platform X. The victims have been transported to area hospitals, with Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo receiving at least 24 patients, according to CBS News.
The tour bus was carrying passengers primarily of Indian, Chinese, and Filipino descent, and translators have been called to the scene to assist. The driver survived the crash and is cooperating with the police, as reported by The Times of India. A tractor-trailer was also reportedly involved in the accident, but the number of victims connected to it has yet to be confirmed.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 90 were shut down, and authorities urged the public to avoid the area while emergency operations were ongoing. New York State Police have confirmed that the investigation into the cause of the rollover crash is still active.
