SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has filed a lawsuit against Apple and OpenAI, alleging anti-competitive practices within the AI industry and manipulation of App Store rankings, according to court documents filed in the Northern District of California on Tuesday. The lawsuit claims that Apple’s policies unfairly favor OpenAI’s products and hinder the growth and visibility of xAI’s offerings.

The core of xAI’s complaint, as reported by Reuters, centers on Apple’s alleged preferential treatment of OpenAI within the iOS ecosystem, particularly concerning integration with Siri and placement within the App Store. xAI contends that these actions stifle competition and limit consumer choice in the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

According to The Wall Street Journal, the lawsuit also targets OpenAI directly, accusing the company of engaging in agreements with Apple that further cement its dominant position. xAI claims these agreements disadvantage smaller AI developers and create an uneven playing field. The specific details of these alleged agreements were not fully disclosed in the initial filings.

Furthermore, Bloomberg reported that xAI’s lawsuit raises concerns about Apple’s App Store ranking algorithms, suggesting that they are structured to favor established players like OpenAI, making it difficult for newer entrants like xAI to gain traction and user adoption. The lawsuit seeks injunctive relief to change Apple’s App Store policies and to prevent further alleged anti-competitive behavior.

Representatives for Apple and OpenAI have not yet issued official comments on the lawsuit. The legal action marks a significant escalation in the competitive tensions within the AI sector, as companies vie for dominance in this burgeoning market.
