NEW YORK — Comedian and actress Heidi Gardner is reportedly exiting the cast of “Saturday Night Live” after an eight-season tenure, according to reports from multiple news outlets. The departure is part of a series of cast changes ahead of the long-running NBC sketch comedy show’s 51st season.

Gardner, who joined the show in 2017 as a featured player and was promoted to a repertory player in 2019, became a fan favorite known for her recurring characters, including teen film critic Bailey Gismert and Angel, “every boxer’s girlfriend from every boxing movie ever,” according to Newsweek. Her exit follows the announced departures of fellow cast members Devon Walker, Michael Longfellow, and Emil Wakim.

While Gardner has not yet made an official public statement about her departure, she hinted at the possibility of leaving in a February 2025 podcast interview with Craig Ferguson. According to a report by People, Gardner admitted to experiencing “sketch fatigue or idea fatigue” after years of writing and performing. “I love playing characters, so I can’t really imagine a world where I’m going to get to do this to this degree again,” she said on the podcast. She added, “I’ve written a lot of sketches. Sometimes I just don’t have an idea for a sketch, a game, or a character.”

The changes to the cast come after “Saturday Night Live” creator and executive producer Lorne Michaels signaled that significant changes were expected ahead of the new season, as reported by The Independent. Gardner was the longest-tenured female cast member in the most recent season, and in season 49, she appeared in more sketches than any other cast member, according to Variety.
