CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) — Apple is in early discussions with Google to use its Gemini artificial intelligence model as the backbone for a revamped version of its Siri voice assistant, according to reports from multiple sources on Friday, August 22, 2025. This potential collaboration, first reported by Bloomberg News, signals a significant shift in Apple’s AI strategy and its effort to catch up in the generative AI space.

According to people familiar with the matter, Apple has approached Google to explore the development of a custom AI model specifically for Siri. In response, Google has reportedly begun training a model that would operate on Apple’s Private Cloud Compute servers, ensuring that the data would not run on Google’s own infrastructure, as reported by 9to5Mac. This arrangement is a key privacy consideration for Apple, which has long emphasized on-device processing to protect user data.

This move comes after Apple faced engineering challenges and delays with a previously announced Siri upgrade, which was slated to be released earlier this year, according to Investing.com. The new, advanced version of Siri, which Apple’s software engineering chief Craig Federighi has called the “second-generation” architecture, is still in development. The company is reportedly testing two versions: one powered by its own internal models and another running on third-party technology, as noted by MacRumors.

While the talks with Google are in their early stages and no deal has been finalized, they highlight Apple’s growing openness to external AI partnerships. Apple has also reportedly explored similar partnerships with Anthropic (maker of the Claude AI model) and OpenAI (maker of ChatGPT), but the high fees and other factors have led the company to consider multiple options, according to Bloomberg, as reported by MacRumors.

The potential integration of Gemini into Siri is seen as a way for Apple to quickly enhance its voice assistant’s capabilities, allowing it to provide more sophisticated and contextually relevant responses. The new, more powerful Siri is expected to launch next year, potentially in the spring of 2026. The discussions about using Gemini are separate from other agreements, such as the previously announced integration of ChatGPT into Apple Intelligence for general knowledge questions.
